Independent Filmmakers and Video-On-Demand

It is no secret that the life of the majority of independent filmmakers is a tough one. It is not an occupation one would choose as a guaranteed path to wealth and a pension. Neither is it for the faint-hearted. On the other hand, the film business is a multi trillion dollar/euro industry and once the content is produced there is layer upon layer of people/entities that are ready to take a slice of the cake and usually the filmmaker is last in line.

So, VOD should be the saving grace for independent filmmakers. There is so much content created in the world and only a tiny fraction of it gets as far as an actual cinema screen. With better quality broadband, downloading and streaming is now possible anywhere in the developed world, providing you have a device to receive it. There are new and exciting possibilities with companies like Distrify making it possible for filmmakers to use the benefits of their own social networks to virally distribute/share their film. I think this is the beginning of the end of the distributor’s grip. Film distribution is getting dragged into the 21st century. Already films are grossing more from VOD than from box office for the major titles. For the more niche categories, VOD may be the only source of income for filmmakers and the more adaptive the technology becomes, the more possibilites there are to actually get eyeballs for your movie.

But, a word of caution. In order for filmmakers to benefit, transparency is needed with the figures – both the sales splits and the actual downloads/views. Hopefully this will come in time.

Singing In The Rain

It rains a lot here in the west of Ireland and even though we get so much of it, I still can’t seem to accept that this is the climate I live in. Watching Eddie Izzard’s video diary from Africa this evening where I see children starving to death as a result of severe drought makes me think that having rain is something I should be celebrating, not moaning about. So, I tell myself, get over it and consider singing in the rain in future!

Summer in Ireland

We are obsessed with the weather and no surprise given that it changes so quickly. This Summer has not been great but you just gotta get out there and enjoy it. Lots of activity in Salthill, Galway today. With sail boats in the bay, people swimming and lots of fishing – and all happening in the rain! Happy days.

Video Content Creation Just Got Interesting

The phrase “content is king” was rolled out in the 90s and used as a hook for every conference, trade show and event that had a passing resemblance to the broadcast industry. It was predicted that with the switch from analog to digital, demand for content would increase substantially.

What really happened was that broadcasters dropped their prices, margins were squeezed, output deals with large producers were favoured and ultimately, content became more about quantity than quality. This was all possible because the broadcasters still controlled distribution.

With the growth of the internet and the advent of YouTube in particular, this changed. Initially it was all about platforms, streaming and bandwidth, in essence, distribution. The investment dollar went into infrastructure and the race was on to capture the online eyeballs and with the growth of Google it was possible to reach your target audience in a cost effective way.

Now we have not only the physical infrastructure to get content distributed, there is also the social network layer which is really another distribution channel that empowers the individual to create and share content and the network to popularise it.

Is it time to roll out the “content is king” phrase again? I think it is and with the tools to create easily available now, a lot of people are enabled. In all of this, video content is the rising star. 90% of all consumer IP traffic will be video by 2013 according to Cisco and 64% of mobile traffic will be video. But what kind of content will be dominant. Producing new video content is not the priority of the traditional media companies, as pointed out in this article by Ashkan Karbasfrooshan and in fact it shouldn’t be their priority, that has to be the domain of a new breed of video producer who concentrates on compelling content that is accessible across all devices and is essentially interactive, from simply sharing to gaming, whatever suits the content. Add to this the perfecting of the art of online marketing and you have the new breed of video producer. Content creation just got interesting!
